One of my first attempts at photographing a hummingbird in flight :: A female "Allen's hummingbird" hovers near a newly installed feeder in the backyard.
Allen's hummingbird (Selasphorus sasin) was named after American collector and taxidermist Charles Andrew Allen (1841-1930) who discovered this species in the U.S. and described it to American scientists.
Its natural habitat is along the Pacific Coast from southern Oregon to southern California and into Mexico.
Hummingbirds have the highest metabolism rate of any warm-blooded animal. They can flap their wings about 50 times per second, and their heart rate can reach in excess of 1,200 beats per minute. They have a breathing rate of 250 breathes per minute even at rest.
Because of their incredibly high metabolism, hummingbirds consume more than their weight in nectar each day, visiting hundreds of flowers daily.

Brian, this is a stunning capture of this little hummingbird! The details in the feathers, eye and beak are outstanding, while you can still see the slightest of movement in the wings! What an exceptional photo! Perfect timing and shutter speed for this shot! LF
