"Adorable Intruder"
Photo by Brian Tada. To the glory of God.
An eastern fox squirrel (Sciurus niger) with its bushy tail peers through my window while perched on a coast live oak tree (Quercus agrifolia) in the San Francisco Bay Area.
These squirrels are transplants from the eastern United States. They were brought over to the Los Angeles area as pets and eventually they escaped and/or were released into the wild.
Some of these “new” squirrels spread their territory to San Francisco, hundreds of miles north.
It is hypothesized that some even crossed the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco and continued their spread northward.
On the west coast, the eastern fox squirrels have displaced native California squirrels and are considered an “invasive species”.
A lesson to be learned:: It's a good idea to be wise stewards of God’s creation by not transporting species outside their native area.
I took this photo looking out through my bedroom window. Often, we don't have to travel far for that memorable photo. I've found the key is to slow down, and take time to observe our surroundings.

Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ב ס " ד] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist and photographer of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
