~~~~~
An orchid cactus (epiphyllum) blooms gloriously in a San Francisco Bay Area garden, August 2017.
This cultivar was named “Kimnach’s Pink” after Myron Kimnach, noted American botanist and former director of the Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California, whose pioneering work in epiphyllum hybridization has produced an amazing array of floral colors we enjoy today.
Epiphyllums are native to the tropical rain forests of Central and South America. Hybridization has produced blossoms of every color except true blue which does not exist naturally in the cactus family.
I have researched the color “pink”. Though it is associated with the noble cause of breast cancer awareness and eventual cure, it has deep spiritual meaning as well. Pink refers to passion for Yeshua Jesus and His Kingdom. It also represents simple yet profound childlike faith in Messiah.
“He [Jesus] called a little child and set him before them, and said, ‘I assure you and most solemnly say to you, unless you repent [that is, change your inner self—your old way of thinking, live changed lives] and become like children [trusting, humble, and forgiving], you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.’” (Matthew 18:2-4, Amplified Bible)
Artwork notes:
Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ב ס " ד] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
