Description
A red admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) sips nectar from a tea tree blossom (Leptospermum) early spring 2015 in the hills of Mill Valley, California.
The distinct orange band across the dorsal forewing makes identification easy for this species of butterfly. Its range extends from Guatemala north through Mexico and the United States to northern Canada, New Zealand, Europe, Northern Africa and Asia.
They are found usually in moist environments, frequenting well-watered gardens, marshes, wooded areas and fields.
Red admiral butterflies are swift fliers that often change direction mid-flight. They are known to be people-friendly and will sometimes approach and perch on a willing person.
Milkweed, red clover, aster, and alfalfa flowers attract these beautiful nectar feeders.
"O Lord, how many and varied are Your works! In wisdom have You made them all; the earth is full of Your riches and Your creatures."
Psalm 104:24, Amplified Bible
