Description

Poetry in motion :: A great egret (Ardea alba) lifts its majestic wings as it prepares to take flight over Richardson Bay near San Francisco in search of food at low tide.

These graceful birds are characterized by their white plumage, yellow-orange bills and black legs and feet. They are a member of the heron family, Ardeidae and are related to pelicans.

Great egrets are found in temperate regions of the world, including many parts of North America and southern Europe. Like their smaller cousin, the snowy egret, they were hunted almost to extinction for their showy breeding plumage which were fashionable in the 19th century. Through conservation efforts, these majestic and stunning members of the wildlife community have made a comeback in their population for millions of people to admire and conserve.

This image was two years in the making, after countless hours of bird watching and photography. I am reminded of a quote attributed to President Abraham Lincoln who overcame many obstacles before being elected and serving as one of the most remarkable presidents in the history of America:: "I will prepare and some day my chance will come."

May this encourage us all to never give up... but to faithfully prepare, and keep pressing forward. Like this egret taking flight, with God's help you will go places you've only dreamed of.

Artwork notes::

Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ב ס " ד] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist and photographer of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
