Description

In this unique capture, a great egret (Ardea alba) lifts one of its wings almost completely vertical as it takes flight over the calm waters of Richardson Bay at a wildlife refuge near San Francisco.

Egrets were hunted almost to extinction for their feathers in the 19th century. Thanks to conservation efforts, these magnificent birds are plentiful once again. The four subspecies of Great Egrets can be seen in wetlands throughout North America, southern Europe, Asia and Africa.

Indeed, the Creator has given us great responsibility to be good stewards of wildlife for future generations to enjoy.
