Description
An adorable California (western) gray squirrel (Sciurus griseus) displays its spectacular tail in the September afternoon sun.
While taking photos of hummingbirds, I heard quite a boisterous hoarse chirping sound and looked up to see this beautiful creature suddenly appear on a pine tree bough overlooking thep backyard.
I've wanted to take a decent photo of a squirrel and my heart's desire was fulfilled unexpectedly. I was certainly glad my equipment had all been set up for this capture.
Life lesson :: Be ready for the pleasant "surprises" God may send your way, especially when photographing His beautiful and majestic creation.
"..All things are possible for one who believes." - Mark 9:23b
The California (western) gray squirrel is the largest native tree-dwelling squirrel along the western coast of the United States and Canada. It can be found in elevations up to 6,500 feet (2,000 meters).
These squirrels are very shy of people and like to travel completely above ground from tree to tree. Their diet includes nuts, seeds, acorns, green vegetation, fungi and insects.
Often they will hide acorns underground for later use and relocate them with their keen sense of smell.
Due to several factors including the introduction of more aggressive non-native squirrel species, the overall population of the western gray squirrel has decreased dramatically, especially in Washington State and southern California.
According to several sources on the internet, the western gray squirrel was first described by George Ord in 1818 based on notes taken by Lewis and Clark at The Dalles, Wasco County, Oregon.
