During the Christmas season, I took a break from my regular routine and make home-made cranberry sauce.

The taste is heavenly… Homemade fresh cannot be beat!

I did this natural light still life spur-the-moment with the basic plan to keep as the main focus the fresh cranberries in the bowl and the sauce in the other. Oranges, organic produce and fresh organic cranberries provided the embellishments.

Aside from minor tweaking in Photoshop, the items in this still life are “as is”.

The white folding table surface provides the subtle dotted texture in the background.

A second version of this still life was done a couple days later, but it looked too “formal” and didn’t turn out as well as my first try, seen here.

Sometimes when you think about something too much, the results are not as “natural” and smooth flowing.

Takeaway: When creativity strikes, seize the moment! :-)

Here is the recipe if you’d like to try it:

Homemade Cranberry Sauce

Ingredients:

3 cups fresh organic cranberries in season
3/4 cup filtered water
3/4 cup organic brown sugar* ~ please see (*) below
Grated zest of one fresh orange (use organic when available)

Method:

Place ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil, until cranberries start to pop (approximately 4 to 5 minutes).

Stir while cooking.

Allow to cool.

Enjoy!

Refrigerate any leftover promptly.

Makes a delicious substitute for jam spread on (gluten free) organic bread, or as a topping on pancakes, fresh fruit and more.

I very rarely use sugar in cooking, preferring to use organic stevia for sweetening. I also use organic fresh or frozen fruit. Photography notes::

Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ב ס " ד] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist and photographer of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
