Description
Organic fuyu persimmons and brilliant persimmon leaves pulse with vibrant fall color, making a festive statement in this backyard still life.
The persimmons are store-bought, and the leaves were harvested from a home-grown persimmon tree raised from seed in the backyard.
A painterly effect has been added to my original photograph, to bring out the colors and textures.
"Fuyu" Japanese winter persimmons ("kaki") are a non-astringent variety and can be eaten like an apple. They are absolutely delicious and refreshing sliced in salads or placed over ice cream or pancakes. If allowed to over-ripen, they can be mashed and made into a delectable jam sweet enough to stand on its own without adding sugar.
The other variety of persimmons found in stores is the "hachiya" which is heart-shaped with the bottom end coming to a point, unlike the fuyu which is flatter. The hachiya persimmon must be ripened almost to the point of being very soft to mellow its astringency, unlike the fuyu variety which has very little astringency even when firm to the touch.
An article published in the Daily Mail (UK) reports that a research team from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem found that persimmons contain significantly higher amounts of dietary fiber, minerals and phenolic compounds, all important to combat atheroscleriosis, a leading cause of heart disease, heart attacks and stroke.
According to Wikipedia, "Sharon Fruit" (named after the Plain of Sharon in Israel) is an Israeli cultivar of fuyu persimmon. Also known as "Triumph", it is believed eating it regularly may reduce the risk of atherosclerosis heart attack. Indeed, God's "farmacy" is the best!

My prefered fruit! (When ripe). A lovely rendering with warm colors! LF
Brian Tada replied:
Thank you very much for your kind words, Dominique! The beauty about this fuyu variety is that they can be eaten even while still firm. They do get sweeter when riper.
