I took this photo of these beautiful jumbo pomegranates while walking through the picturesque Old City market in Jerusalem, Israel during my family's Holy Land pilgrimage in November 2009.
Pomegranates are native to the Middle East, eastward to the Himalayas in northern India. They have been cultivated since antiquity throughout the Mediterranean region of Asia, Africa and Europe.
They are traditionally served on the second night of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which occurs sometime between Sept. 5th and Oct. 5th, depending on the year. This healthful delicacy rich in vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants is called the New Fruit because it is featured prominently in Israel and often mentioned in the Bible, its symbol decorating the High Priestly garments (Exodus 28:31-35).
Its average of 613 seeds signifies the 613 commandments or "mitzvah" in the Torah and also represents the many good deeds a person hopes to accomplish in the New Year. In Christianity, the pomegranate symbolizes new life (resurrection) and unity -- many parts, one body (as mentioned in I Corinthians 12:12,20).
Pomegranates are one of many crops abundantly produced in the land of Israel, which is a major exporter of fresh produce and a world-leader in agricultural technologies. This is truly a significant modern-day fulfillment of ancient Biblical prophecy:: "The wilderness and dry land will be glad. The desert will rejoice and blossom like a lily." Isaiah 35:1, Tree of Life Bible
During a speech, the great civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said in 1968: "Israel is one of the great outposts of democracy in the world, and a marvelous example of what can be done, how desert land can be transformed into an oasis of brotherhood and democracy."
When I visited Israel and walked that blessed land and met the beautiful and compassionate people, I experienced first-hand the result of many miracles that brought about that country's supernatural re-birth.
