Pictured is my photo of a small cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae), seen in the front yard garden as it rests on the curled leaf of a pyracantha plant.
It is from the Pieridea genus, a large family of butterflies from which the word "butterfly" was coined by early British naturalists.
I noticed that this butterfly only has four legs visible. From internet research, I learned that all butterflies indeed have six legs, however, some varieties have their front pair greatly reduced in size and tucked along their thorax.
The cabbage white butterfly is originally from Europe, Africa and Asia, and was accidentally introduced to North America, Australia and New Zealand.
The caterpillars of this species are called the Imported Cabbage Worm and can cause considerable damage to cabbage and other cruciferous mustard-family crops such as broccoli and cauliflower.
It intrigues me how God can transform a "pest" into a thing of such beauty. Indeed, by observing nature, we are reminded of how the Creator can take even life's ugly situations and turn them into memories of beauty when we actively put our trust in Him. Our loving Heavenly Father will see to it that it all works out for our best.
"To console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified." (Isaiah 61:3, NKJV)
