During my seventh time photographing the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, I finally got the photo I wanted as they flew directly over me, their smoke trails creating an artistic effect.
Pictured are five of the six jets performing a modified delta formation beside San Francisco Bay on October 11, 2019 during Fleet Week.
The thunderous roar of the engines was exhilarating as they sped past within close range. I took this photo looking straight up.
When I think of the Blue Angels and how they represent the U.S. military protecting America and freedom, I am reminded about God’s angels sent by the Creator of the universe::
“For He will command His angels in regard to you, to protect and defend and guard you in all your ways [of obedience and service].” Psalm 91:11 (AMP)
The Blue Angels are the United States Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron featuring Navy and Marine Corps jet pilots. Celebrating their 78th anniversary in 2024, they have performed for nearly 500 million people worldwide since 1946. Approximately 11 million people view their spectacular performances each year. Additionally, each show season the Blue Angels visit more than 50,000 people during school and hospital visits.
San Francisco Fleet Week (SFFW) ~ usually held in October ~ is an annual public event honoring the contributions of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. According to the official SFFW website, it is the largest and most significant event of its kind in the U.S. and features a unique training and education program bringing together civilian and military forces to develop and share best practices in humanitarian assistance.
My sincere hope is that this image will inspire both the viewer and the buyer of this artwork to pray for our military, particularly during the holidays when they will not be with their families while on duty.
May we honor, respect and support the brave men and women in uniform who have given much and risked their lives so that we may live in freedom.
"No one has greater love than this: that he lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13, Tree of Life Version (TLV)
Interesting note ~ In case you are wondering how they produce the smoke trails, here is information from the official website of the United States Navy Blue Angels::
"The smoke is produced by pumping biodegradable, paraffin-based oil directly into the exhaust nozzles of the aircraft, where the oil is instantly vaporized into smoke. The smoke provides a traceable path for spectators to follow, so they can see the flight profile that has been flown. It also enhances safety of flight by providing a valuable means by which the solo pilots can see each other during opposing maneuvers and conditions of lowered visibility or haze. The smoke poses no hazard to the environment."
Facts on the Blue Angels in the above description are based on information from the official U.S. Navy Blue Angels website.

Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ב ס " ד] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist and photographer of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
