Pictured are second-year blooms from my family's poinsettia plant grown in the backyard, which re-bloomed with smaller, beautiful red bracts and flowers.

According to Wikipedia, the poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is native to Mexico and Central America. It was named in honor of Joel Roberts Poinsett, a botanist and the first United States ambassador to Mexico, who introduced this colorful plant to the U.S. in 1825.

Poinsettias are a favorite Christmas decoration in churches, homes and offices throughout North America. December 12th is National Poinsettia Day in the United States.

The star-shaped leaf pattern of the poinsettia is said to commemorate the Star of Bethlehem, and the crimson color represents the blood sacrifice through the crucifixion of Jesus for the cleansing of our sins and eternal salvation when we receive that most precious gift into our hearts.
