Artist's Description

Here's looking at you :: A vivid dancer damselfly (Argia vivida) rests on top of a recycling receptacle in the front yard on a warm summer afternoon in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Damselflies are beneficial insects belonging to the suborder Zygoptera in the order Odonata. According to the North Carolina State University entomology website, the name "Odonata" comes from the Greek word, "odonto-" meaning "tooth", referring to the strong teeth found on the mandibles of these carnivorous insects.

There are over 2,900 species of damselfies, and like dragonfies, they are found on every continent except Antarctica.

Although similar in appearance to dragonflies, they are smaller, have slimmer bodies and have weaker flight patterns than the stronger purposeful flight of the dragonfly. Damselflies generally fold their wings tightly together when at rest unlike dragonflies, which have all four of their wings outstretched both in flight and when resting.
