Description
Here's looking at you :: A vivid dancer damselfly (Argia vivida) rests on top of a recycling receptacle in the front yard on a warm summer afternoon in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Damselflies are beneficial insects belonging to the suborder Zygoptera in the order Odonata. According to the North Carolina State University entomology website, the name "Odonata" comes from the Greek word, "odonto-" meaning "tooth", referring to the strong teeth found on the mandibles of these carnivorous insects.
There are over 2,900 species of damselfies, and like dragonfies, they are found on every continent except Antarctica.
Although similar in appearance to dragonflies, they are smaller, have slimmer bodies and have weaker flight patterns than the stronger purposeful flight of the dragonfly. Damselflies generally fold their wings tightly together when at rest unlike dragonflies, which have all four of their wings outstretched both in flight and when resting.
Damselflies are also distinguished by their bulbous compound eyes being at somewhat of a distance from each other, whereas dragonflies have both their compound eyes touching each other.
Like their larger counterparts, damselflies are very beneficial to gardeners, capturing and eating mosquitoes, flies and other pests.
Indeed, they are joy to watch and worth the extra effort to protect these natural insect control patrols by maintaining a natural garden free of pesticides and herbicides.
"ADONAI, how countless are Your works! In wisdom You made them all -- the earth is full of Your creatures." Psalm 104:24, Tree of Life Bible
