Artist's Description
This is the view from a road overlooking southern Marin County, California. San Francisco Bay can be seen in the distance. Angel Island is visible to the left and San Francisco would be located toward the right-side of the photo under the blanket of fog.
This photo was taken from within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), one of the largest urban parks in the world encompassing 80,002 acres of public land featuring ecologically and historically important landscapes in the San Francisco Bay Area.
According to the National Park Service website, the GGNRA chronicles 200 years of history, featuring Native American culture, the Spanish Empire frontier, the California Gold Rush, the development of American coastal fortifications, and growth of the urban San Francisco area. This incredibly diverse park is home to 19 separate ecosystems and 1,273 plant and animal species, and features 59 miles of bay and ocean shoreline.
