Description
The black phoebe (Sayornis nigricans) is a passerine bird in the flycatcher family. According to Wikipedia, the flycatchers are the largest family of birds on earth, with over 400 species.
The genus Sayornis is named after Thomas Say, an American naturalist.
Black phoebe birds are year-round residents in southwestern Oregon, the Pacific Coast of California, and parts of Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, south to western Mexico.
This distinctive bird is found mostly in the vicinity of water and, like this one pictured near San Francisco Bay, it likes to perch in the open, scanning for insects to catch and eat.
"Look at the birds of the air. They do not sow or reap or gather crops into barns; yet your Heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not more valuable than they?" (Matthew 6:26)
