A male Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) sips nectar from a newly installed backyard feeder, its gorget (throat feathers) illuminated by the sun's reflection.
These specialized feathers exhibit a changing colorful iridescent quality through refraction when light reaches the feathers at the right angle.
This photo was taken in early June 2015 in the late afternoon near San Francisco.
Anna's hummingbird is named after Anna Massena, Duchess of Rivoli. Its breeding range has extended significantly with the planting of exotic ornamental plants. Their habitat was once confined to northern Baha California, Mexico and southern California in the early 20th century; however, they have expanded greatly to the entire Pacific Coast northward to southern Canada, and eastward to Arizona, parts of souther...
