Description
Tall reeds wave their greeting amidst scarlet flowering plants along the shoreline of Richardson Bay near San Francisco in October 2022. Bold and vibrant, this landscape portrait has an abstract feel to it, using a cell phone photo I took as the reference.
Over 400,000 brush strokes comprise this artwork ~ one of my first ventures into abstract artistry. This is a significant departure from my regular style of photo-realism and nature action photos. Trying new things is a valuable opportunity to get out of one’s comfort zone.
While pondering this scene, the scarlet hues of the blossoms remind me of the precious blood of Yeshua Jesus lovingly shed on the Cross for the remission of sins of all humanity for each person who gratefully receives this important gift of pardon.
Having received training as a pianist, I take the principles I have learned in music and apply them to photography.
Tempo, pitch, tone, volume, voice, phrasing, and more ~ indeed, several musical elements are performed simultaneously when playing an instrument or singing. And through many years of practice and training, it almost becomes second nature in a way. The skills you learn become ingrained in the subconscious part of your amazing brain, called upon in a moment’s notice to be deployed with flowing accuracy.
Likewise, in photography, many elements combine to form the image as you might see in this art piece: strategic timing of the animated reeds bobbing their heads between gusts of wind; positioning the camera to incorporate the various elements in their proper, artistic perspective; and getting the afternoon lighting “just right” are only some of the things I must think of on the fly as I take the photo ~ in this case, with my old-school G4 flip phone held 2-3 inches above ground, angling upward.
It was more than a bit awkward with the tiny phone monitor barely visible at that crazy angle, with the sun’s reflections almost completely obliterating the preview screen which in turn almost wiped out my visual frame of reference. I truly thank God and give the Creator all the glory and credit for the miracle of being able to bring this image to life.
Next comes the fun part. From my original photo, I applied a gentle HDR effect and a separate specialized abstract process guided by computer and painstakingly hand-tweaked throughout the image. The style used is a simulated felt-tip pen drawing technique with 433,737 “brush strokes”. Finally, a texture was applied as the finishing touch.
This abstract landscape artwork is the product of the head, heart, hand and machine working together, which ~ it is my hope and prayer~ will bring you enjoyment in your home as a wall print or as a greeting card to send to your loved one, letting them know you are thinking of them.

Artwork notes:
The "Fine Art America" watermark in the full resolution preview will not show in the final print/product purchased.
Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem"ב ס " ד ] ] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
