Description
Lauded as the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century, the Judean Desert Scrolls, commonly known as the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in this cave and ten others at Qumran, Israel, located near the northwest shoreline of the Dead Sea, the lowest land area on Earth at approximately 1,400 feet (427 meters) below sea level.
Pictured is legendary Cave No. 4 where, in 1952, 75% of all artifacts from the 11 Qumran caves were discovered, according to the Israeli Antiquities Authority. These consisted of portions of Hebrew Scriptures (the forerunner of several books featured in the Christian Old Testament), works on Jewish law, prayers, tefillin and mezuzot.
At the time of their discovery, these Biblical manuscripts were considered nearly 1,000 years older than any others previously known to exist!
Some scholars believe an ancient Jewish community known as the Essenes lived in this area during the Second Temple Period, which includes the time of Jesus.
I took this photo in November 2009 of these legendary rock formations during my family's trip to Israel when my parents celebrated their 50th Anniversary. Visiting Israel has been by far one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I've never been the same since. Truly, the pilgrimage of a lifetime!
It is indeed a double honor to view some of the actual fragments of the Dead Sea scrolls in a special traveling exhibit on display at a museum in San Francisco and then, many years later, to visit and see the very spot where these priceless, spiritual treasures were discovered in Israel.
Even as the ancient Biblical texts were hidden away in these caves for safekeeping, may we hide God's Word in our hearts through memorization, meditation and life application, so that we may fulfill God's exciting destiny for each of our lives, to give Him honor and glory and make a lasting difference during the time we have on Earth.
"Your Word I have treasured
and stored in my heart,
That I may not sin against You.
Blessed and reverently praised
are You, O Lord;
Teach me Your statutes."
~ Psalm 119:11-12

Artwork notes::
A painterly effect was applied to my original photo to bring out the natural beauty of this spectacular, historic landscape with a rich spiritual heritage.
This image would look stunning ordered as a metal print. Greeting cards (quantity discount for a pack of 10 or 25) are also available. Please see the ordering options on this page for more details. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ב ס " ד] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist and photographer of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".

Absolutely amazing! God is not dead, nor doth He sleep! He continues to reveal truths to the children of men, though, sadly many of them reject them, preferring to follow the ways of the world.
