Description
The complementary colors of brilliant orange California poppies (Eschscholzia californica) and blue Bentham lupines (Lupinus benthamii A. Heller) make a stunning and majestic combination in this colorful hillside view in Gorman, California next to the Interstate 5 freeway in April 2019 during the exceptional Superbloom season.
Both species of wildflowers are native to the Golden State.
I had driven from the San Francisco Bay Area to north Los Angeles County, searching for the floral spectacle I read online.
However, as I drove along the Grapevine portion of I-5, the hills yielded little more than the lovely lime green of spring grass and tiny patches of wildflowers here and there.
I was about to give up and head on down to Antelope Valley for the poppies when I spotted a patch of these wildflowers on a hillside. These were accessible via a side road, so I parked safely to the side and set up my tripod to take this photo.
The afternoon sunlight was fairly decent. However, I decided to wait out one more day to try lighting at a different time of day.
I headed over to nearby Lancaster in the remaining minutes of daylight to take photos of the golden blooms carpeting the desert floor among the stately Joshua Trees.
Parking at a safe place, I spent the night in the car.
When I awoke the next morning, I headed back to the same spot where I took this photo and made more pictures, this time in morning light.
Comparing the two series of photos ~ the first group taken in the afternoon, the second group in the morning ~ I discovered the lighting at this location was better in the afternoon.
This photo was selected from among the pictures I took from that group.
I hope you enjoy the beauty of God’s creation in this wildflower portrait.

Artwork Notes ::
An HDR effect was gently applied during the editing process to bring out the details of the blossoms. So vibrant were the California poppies in the original photo that I had to tone down their brilliance!
Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem”[ב ס " ד] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist and photographer of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
