Description

A male Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna) makes a backyard visit in the San Francisco Bay Area on Palm Sunday, during the first evening of Spring 2016.

Hummingbirds have the unique ability of flying forward, backward, up, down, sideways and hovering. They can beat their wings up to 80 times per second and can fly an average of 30 miles per hour. They have been documented to do aerial dives of up to 60 miles per hour.

The feathers on the top of its head, which appear velvety black in this photo, turn a brilliant red when light refracts off the feathers at a certain angle (please see "December Hummer" in my hummingbird gallery).

These flying jewels remind me of the angels in heaven who are God's messengers of grace and agents of worship to the One Who made all things. Indeed, they are the image of perfection, personified in creation, in singing their praises:

"Kadosh, kadosh, kadosh
Adonai Elohei-Tzva'ot,
asher haya v'hoveh v'yavo!
Holy, holy, holy
is the Lord God of Hosts,
who was and who is
and who is to come!"
