Description
With a look of determination, an adorable Anna’s hummingbird lands gracefully on a winter twig by Richardson Bay near Mill Valley, California on a very blustery February afternoon.
Anna’s hummingbirds (Calypte anna) are the only hummingbird species in North America whose head and gorget (throat) feathers of the male turn various shades of iridescent red when sunlight refracts at the right angle.
Female Anna's hummers have a green crown and exhibit some vibrant colors in their gorget throat feathers, as seen in the other hummingbird images in my gallery.
This tiny bird, as adorable as it is diminutive yet tough as nails, reminds me of an Olympic gymnast who exhibits great poise and expertise to make a successful landing after a difficult routine.
I have researched about these intriguing birds that have captured people’s imaginations, and found that they are built like a very efficient flying machine, their wings flapping up to 50 times or more per second in a figure-eight, enabling them to fly forward, backward, sideways, upside down and to hover in place.
Their legs and feet are very delicate, just able to allow the bird to perch on a branch and to scoot sideways.
The hummingbird's forte is masterful flight, and to accomplish this, their wings are powered by flight muscles that take up to one-third of the entire body weight of the hummingbird!
As I thought of the marvel of these magnificently beautiful birds, I am reminded of how nature can teach us to adapt and persevere even in the midst of seemingly insurmountable odds.
One of the greatest self-improvement passages is Philippians 4:13, which I have posted above my desk:
“I CAN do all things in Christ Who strengthens me.” (NKJV)
[emphasis added]
When we trust God, the Creator of the universe, with our life, our destiny and allow Him to show us our purpose ~ why we are created to make a difference on this planet ~ we can have that confidence the Master Designer has our best interest at heart, and will enable and empower us to accomplish great things that will produce a lasting difference in those around us.
So when you see the tiny but mighty hummingbird zipping about without a care in the world, just remember that God created YOU to be a miracle who can do amazing things that will bring honor and glory to the Creator.
That’s magnificent purpose!

Photography notes::
To eliminate distracting elements that would take away from the image, a few extra branches poking up from the bottom of the photo were cloned out. Otherwise, the placement of hummingbird and remaining branch are "as-is".
Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ב ס " ד] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist and photographer of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
