Description
A honeybee visits a thistle growing wild in the backyard in the San Francisco Bay Area. This photo was taken in July 2011.
The thistle plant is a member of the Asteraceae (Aster) family characterized by sharp spines designed to protect itself.
Thistles from different varieties sport showy compact blooms in pink, purple, yellow, rose, or white colors.
If you look closely at this macro shot, you can see the blossom contains dozens of tubular-shaped flowers, some of which are topped with tiny white asterisk-shaped petals.
This photo shows a bloom from the Bull (Spear) thistle plant (botanical name: Cirsium vulgare). It is native to Europe, Asia and northwestern Africa, and has been introduced in North America, Africa and Australia.
This thistle plant is the national emblem of Scotland, and its emblem is used in regal settings.
Most thistle varieties are biannual, completing their life-cycle in two years with blooms occurring during the second year.
Thistle seeds can be dispersed by wind up to a half-mile and if not contained, they may become an aggressively invasive weed in some areas.
Some thistle plants have medicinal uses, others have edible parts for food, and still others are grown as ornamental decorations.
Thistle blossoms are a good food source for birds, butterflies and honeybees.
The story of the thistle reminds me of how the Creator can turn life's challenges and disappointments into elements of beauty, healing and usefulness, if we take a closer look with eyes of gratitude.
