Description
This is a composite of 13 consecutive photos I took of a great egret (Ardea alba) making a short flight along the shoreline of Richardson Bay in Mill Valley, California near San Francisco.
The original file for this image is massive by 2017 standards when it was created — 1.24 GB. It is the result of two years of birdwatching, waiting for the right moment… and prayer. The editing process alone took well over one month of tedious work. Definitely a labor of love!
For the background, I took a photo of the water within a few minutes of the bird photos. A mirror image of the water photo was stitched together to form a wide panorama background. The individual bird photos were then merged with this background.
From takeoff to landing, the entire flight sequence lasted less than 7 seconds. I will be forever grateful to God for sending this magnificent bird within such close range, displaying the beauty of avian flight.
"O Lord, how many and varied are Your works!
In wisdom You have made them all;
The earth is full of Your riches and Your creatures."
~ Psalm 104:24
Great egrets are found in temperate regions of the world, including many parts of North America and southern Europe. Like the smaller snowy egrets, they were hunted almost to extinction for their showy breeding plumage which were fashionable in the 19th century. Through conservation efforts, these majestic and stunning members of the wildlife community have made a comeback in their population for millions of people to admire and conserve.

Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ב ס " ד] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist and photographer of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
