Description

The silhouette of the majestic Golden Gate Bridge stands out from a spectacular sunset over the mile-wide Golden Gate Strait which connects San Francisco Bay with the Pacific Ocean. This photo was taken early evening in October 2015 overlooking the bay at Fort Baker, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area which is one of the largest urban parks in the world.

I have traveled over this famous architectural icon literally thousands of times and never tire of its beauty, especially when paired with God's amazing sunsets.

This image is dedicated in loving memory of my precious Mother Cheryl, who transitioned to heaven in October 2018. This was one of her favorite photos.

The Golden Gate Bridge is considered one of the engineering marvels of the world. Chief Engineer Joseph B. Strauss led a team of gifted professionals to design and construct what is considered one of the most beautiful and photographed bridges on Earth.

Construction on this spectacular span commenced on January 5, 1933. It is designed in the Art Deco style of the early 20th Century. The fabricated steel used in its construction was manufactured by Bethlehem Steel plants in New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania, and shipped through the Panama Canal to San Francisco.

When the bridge opened to traffic on May 28, 1937, it was the world's longest suspension span, a record held for 27 years until New York City's Verrazano Narrows Bridge was opened on November 21, 1964, which is 60 feet longer.

Up to 40 million vehicles cross the Golden Gate Bridge each year, including northbound and southbound lanes. The span carries traffic for U.S. Highway 101 and California Highway 1 between San Francisco and Marin County to the north.
