A black-necked stilt (Himantopus mexicanus) scopes out the area before returning to its young. I took this photo during a walk as it flew by near Richardson Bay just north of San Francisco.
This shorebird inhabits the coastal areas of California, the interior Western United States, and the Gulf of Mexico east to Florida and south through Mexico and Central and South America.
