Description
Dragonfly photo shoot:: This is my first time capturing one of these beauties in flight.
This photo was taken near a swamp area by Richardson Bay in Mill Valley, California just north of San Francisco. A shutter speed of 1/2000th of a second was used to capture the detail in its wings.
The Lord knew my heart's desire was to get a dragonfly on digital film. He not only granted my wish, He sent one staring right at me when I took its photo.
Thank you, Pappa God, for your beautiful creation that shows us Your unending love for us!
"Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart."
Psalm 37:4
The dragonfly is a beneficial insect belonging to the order Odonta, suborder Anisoptera.
There are approximately 3,000 species of this majestic creature, and they are found on every continent except Antarctica.
They are agile fliers, possessing the ability to fly up, down, forward, backward and to hover. According to Wikipedia, the larger dragonflies are capable of maximum flight speeds of up to 22-34 mph (10-15 meters per second) and a cruising speed of 10 mph (4.5 meters per second).
The eyes of the dragonfly are highly sensitive to light and motion, with up to 24,000 light-sensing eye facets allowing them a near 360-degree field of vision.
They are very beneficial insects in the garden and are excellent hunters of pests, being able to catch and consume many mosquitoes, earning them the name, "mosquito hawks".
Let us keep these beautiful garden-beneficial creatures healthy by maintaining our waterways as clean as possible and promoting the use of safe, natural alternatives to pesticides and herbicides.

Artwork notes:
Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for B'ezras Hashem, ב ס " ד meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria", which means "Glory to God alone".
