"BUGs BUGs AND MORE BUGs", 08.09.15
This European praying mantis (Mantis religiosa) arrived at my family's front door with flying fanfare. Mom first discovered this amazing and intriguing beneficial specimen the other day, and expressed astonishment at its size. I measured it at a whopping 3.25 inches in length, among the largest insects I've ever seen in the San Francisco Bay Area.
I carefully transported it to the backyard and let it loose on a flowering Dipladenia vine where it proceeded to explore. Here it is doing a balancing act between the vines and blossoms.
The more I observe nature, the more I realize only a Divine Creative Intelligence could have designed all these amazing animals!
"ADONAI, how countless are Your works! In wisdom You made them all - the earth is full of Your creatures." Psalm 104:24, Tree of Life Bible
The native habitat of the praying mantis includes Europe, Asia and Africa. According to Wikipedia, it was introduced to North America in 1899 via a shipment of nursery plants from southern Europe. It is now found in areas ranging from the Northeastern United States to the Pacific Northwest and across Canada.
Although not native to Connecticut, it became the state's official insect on October 1, 1977, according to the official state website.
Armed with a voracious appetite, the praying mantis consumes insects such as flies, crickets, mosquitoes and wasps, making it a friend of the gardener in natural pest control.
This image would make an ideal gift for the bug lover, naturalist and/or gardener in the family. It is available as a print (framed or unframed), poster, throw pillow, or tote bag (please see options above). Greeting cards are available with discounted price-per-unit for packs of 10 or 25 cards. All artwork in my portfolio at Fine Art America comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. World-wide shipping is available.
