Description
An eastern fox squirrel (Sciurus niger) peers through a gap in the branches while perched on a coast live oak tree (Quercus agrifolia) in the San Francisco Bay Area.
I took this photo looking out through my bedroom window.
These squirrels are transplants from the eastern United States. They were brought over to the Los Angeles area as pets and eventually they escaped and/or were released into the wild.
Some of these “new” squirrels spread their territory to San Francisco, hundreds of miles north.
It is hypothesized that some even crossed the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco and continued their spread northward.
On the west coast, the eastern fox squirrels have displaced native California squirrels and are considered an “invasive species”.
A lesson to be learned:: Best to be good stewards of God’s creation by not transporting species outside their native area.
Artwork notes::
An HDR and painterly effect have been applied to my original photograph.

Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ב ס " ד] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist and photographer of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
