Description
This is a blossom from a Dipladenia vine profusely flowering in the backyard. The deep red color of the trumpet blossoms have a velvety texture with eloquent tints of magenta and lavender. It was one of the most challenging to photograph in getting the color to be presented accurately. After five separate photo shoots and more than a few changes of location in its portable growing container to get the lighting right, the image you see is the one with which I am most satisfied.
The Dipladenia is a genus of 120 species of flowering, tuberous-rooted, woody-stemmed climbing vines native to Central and South America.
It can be grown as a trailing vine reaching 10 feet or cultivated as a bush. Sometimes this plant is grown indoors in a sunny, draft-free location. It is a perennial in temperate climates, and treated as an annual in cold-weather areas.
The vines consist of thick, dark-green leaves measuring four inches in length with showy trumpet-like flowers 3-5 inches in diameter which bloom mostly in the summer months, or all-year round in warmer climates. The blossoms come in a variety of colors including red, purple, pink and pure white.
Contact with the milky sap may cause skin irritation. According to the Encyclopedia of House Plants, any part of the plant may cause mild stomach upset if ingested.
Dipladenia is very similar in appearance to Mandevilla, another subtropical vine, and the two are often confused with each other.
It is said that Dipladenia attracts bees, butterflies and birds. It certainly makes a stunning addition to any garden or landscape.
The deep royal red color of this blossom reminds me of the precious blood of Yeshua Jesus shed at Calvary for the cleansing of my sins that I may go free with the clear knowledge I am forgiven, as I have received His precious gift of eternal life.
"'Come now, and let us reason together,' says the Lord, 'though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.'" Isaiah 1:18, NKJV
