Description
A brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) showing its bright red throat pouch launches from a floating position to make a dramatic strike while fishing for its meal.
At one time, the brown pelican was on the endangered species list and heading toward extinction. The pesticide DDT was considered one of the major factors.
With the banning of this chemical and good conservation efforts, this magnificent bird made a significant comeback and was removed from the endangered species list in November 2009. They can be seen along the western and southern coastlines of the United States for generations of people to enjoy and conserve.
This photo was taken on a mild February day in 2016 at a wildlife refuge by an estuary at low tide near San Francisco Bay.
"Adonai, how countless are Your works! In wisdom You made them all --
the earth is full of Your creatures." Psalm 104:24 (Tree of Life Version TLV)

Artwork notes::
Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ב ס " ד] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist and photographer of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
