Description
A mother black-necked stilt* (Himantopus mexicanus) and her offspring wade in the marsh near Richardson Bay north of San Francisco while the father scoped out the area.
These elegant birds are found along the coastal areas of California, the interior Western United States, and the Gulf of Mexico east to Florida and south through Central and South America.
The precocial young are able to leave the nest and swim within 1-2 hours after hatching. They begin to fly within 4-5 weeks. Family groups of both parents and offspring tend to remain together well after the young can fly.
This is a beautiful illustration of the Creator's love for all creation:
"He gives strength to the weary, and to one without vigor He adds might" (Isaiah 40:29, Tree of Life Version [TLV]).
*Please see my other photo of a black-necked stilt in flight, in the "Shore Birds" album of my portfolio.
