Description
A chrysanthemum blooms gloriously on a balmy San Francisco Bay Area October 2015 afternoon in the backyard garden. This is the third year this beautiful plant has re-bloomed.
Chrysanthemums (also known as chrysanths or mums) are members of the Asteraceae (Compositae) family, and are related to cosmos, dahlias, marigolds, sunflowers, and zinnias. They are native to northeastern Europe and Asia.
According to the National Chrysanthemum Society USA, a single bloom of the chrysanthemum is actually comprised of hundreds of tiny individual florets. There are two kinds of florets: disk florets and ray florets. The center or eye of the entire blossom contains disk florets, and the outer ones are ray florets.
The chrysanthemum plant in this photo is blooming the third time since it was purchased from a store.
The golden tones of this magnificent flower remind me of Thanksgiving and being grateful throughout the year.
"O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever." Psalm 107:1, KJV

Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ב ס " ד] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist and photographer of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
