Description
A vibrant group of Gloriosa daisies (Rudbeckia hirta [Asteraceae]) graces a honeybee garden exhibit at the Sonoma County Fair, Santa Rosa, California in August 2015.
These colorful flowers are members of the sunflower family, which includes the black-eyed Susan.
A plant related to the Gloriosa daisy is the state flower of Maryland, and according to Wikipedia, it is native to Eastern and Central North America.
Butterflies (and honeybees) are attracted to this flowering plant, especially when planted in a large group.
Once established, Gloriosa daisies are drought-tolerant and make a showy presence in a sunny location in the garden. According to Cornell University, this annual plant blooms in the summer through mid-fall and self-seeds readily, although it is not considered invasive. It makes an excellent cut flower.
The Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa, California where these flowers were viewed features the largest flower show on the West Coast, and it is the only one to have a themed floral display of this magnitude in the United States. It has numerous spectacular professional and amateur landscape displays and educational exhibits.
"Consider how the flowers grow. They never work or spin yarn for clothes. But I say that not even Solomon in all his majesty was dressed like one of these flowers." Luke 12:27
